Bernardo (George Chakiris) and (Rita Moreno)are hot, hot, hot! Everyone in this film is excellent, but these two really stand out. No wonder they both got for the role. I also include the little drama before the song because I love seeing them bickering like an old married couple.

I’m not doubting another origin. I remember my teacher telling us in a Puerto Rican Studies class. Do the research. I don’t remember the Senator’s name. He was from the South, I believe. :) Take care!

What’s with the **** towards Asians? Do you think no Chinese people made it to PR? They did. Check the history before giving a thumbs down on something you’re not getting.

STILL the best musical of that period. Almost everything else was a waste. The dnacing is vibrant and dynamic on all counts

mg they dont sound from puerto rico at all!!!!

  10. July 4th, 2007 at 02:31 | #10

Yes, it certainly is….and keeps to the original feeling of the play, though, ironically, in the play it is sung only by the women. Adding the men-women rivalry was the only inspired change to the film…

Absolutely the best part of the film. :)

    With Karen Olivo as Anita.

I know it’s shown in a movie and it’s success comes from the Broadway Musical type, but it is an Opera. It can be debated forever!

  21. July 19th, 2007 at 04:01 | #21

    Best. Musical. Number. Ever!

I saw the new Broadway play in April. The music and dancing was great. The girl who played Maria was very good but the Jets could not sing a lick. Also I feel Pretty amd I have a love were sung in Spanish.

I first watched West Side Story about 3 months ago. Now it’s with me always and all the songs are sung in my head, again and again. I walk everyday in the rhythm of “America” going over the lyrics in my head and I dream in the melody of “Tonight”. I blame Bernstein and Sondheim for this… I can’t let it go! It is so brilliant… and if Hollywood ever funds a remake of the film I would love to be involved! I think they should by the way, to attract new generations to this classic.
